Schwanensee / Dornröschen

Released in 1964 on the Fontana label, this recording features the Virtuoso Symphony of London under the direction of Arthur Winograd. It was produced during a period when Fontana, a budget-conscious subsidiary of Philips, sought to make high-quality orchestral repertoire accessible to a wider listening public. The release pairs selections from Tchaikovsky's iconic ballets, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty, capturing the melodic richness that made these works staples of the Western classical canon.

The recording showcases Winograd’s approach to Tchaikovsky, which emphasizes a sharp, disciplined orchestral precision over purely romantic effusion. At the time of its release, such budget-friendly classical recordings were instrumental in building home libraries for mid-century listeners. While it did not carry the prestige of major international labels like Decca or EMI, the performance remains a representative example of 1960s classical production standards and the persistent demand for the composer’s grand ballet suites.
