Schwanensee • Dornröschen • Der Nußknacker

Released in 1980 by Deutsche Grammophon, this compilation features highlights from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s three major ballets—Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker—conducted by Herbert von Karajan. It belongs to the label's mid-price reissue series, designed to make high-quality interpretations of the classical canon accessible to a broader audience during a period when the popularity of orchestral suites was peaking in the home audio market.

The performances were culled from Karajan’s earlier, critically acclaimed sessions with the Berlin Philharmonic. Known for his meticulous attention to orchestral color and refined legato phrasing, Karajan aimed to emphasize the symphonic richness of Tchaikovsky’s writing rather than treating the scores as mere theatrical accompaniment. The recording was well-received for its sonic clarity and the sophisticated, polished execution characteristic of the Berlin Philharmonic’s collaboration with the conductor during the mid-twentieth century.
