Schwanensee · Dornröschen · Nussknacker (Ballettsuiten)

Released in 1980 under the Philips label, this compilation record gathers orchestral suites from Tchaikovsky's three great ballets: Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker. The performances are drawn from archival recordings featuring the London Symphony Orchestra under the batons of renowned conductors Pierre Monteux, Antal Dorati, and Anatole Fistoulari. This release served as a mid-range, accessible entry point for classical music listeners, repackaging high-quality mid-century interpretations into a unified collection that showcased the label's deep catalog of Tchaikovsky recordings.

The production philosophy behind Philips's '6527' series focused on delivering quintessential interpretations of core repertoire to the public in a cohesive, affordable format. By curating these specific suites, the label emphasized the melodic clarity and orchestral grandeur that defined the LSO's mid-century sound. The release was received as a standard reference for ballet music enthusiasts, valued for the technical expertise of the conductors—particularly Monteux and Dorati, whose expertise in the romantic ballet repertoire was considered definitive at the time.
