Where it came from
This 12-inch vinyl release, cataloged as JAY 1, features remixes of tracks by soul artists Jill Scott and Maxwell. Produced in 2001, it emerged from the vibrant house music scene of the early 2000s, where prominent producers like Jay-J and Chris Lum were frequently tapped to rework neo-soul and R&B hits for club play. These specific remixes were designed to translate the smooth, mid-tempo vocal stylings of Scott and Maxwell into rhythmic, dance-floor-oriented house anthems.
The record was issued under a 'Not On Label' designation, suggesting it was likely a white-label or promotional pressing intended for distribution among professional DJs and industry insiders rather than a broad retail release. The aesthetic of the design leans into the utilitarian, sparse look common among limited-run dance promos of the era, focusing primarily on functional track information to ensure quick identification during live performances.
