Where it came from
Released in 1979 on the independent Basque label Laminak, Senperen Kantuz serves as a significant archival artifact of Basque musical heritage. Produced during a period of cultural resurgence in the region, the record was created to document and preserve the traditional singing styles and oral histories of the Senpere (Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle) community. It represents a grassroots effort to capture regional folk performances that might otherwise have been lost to the homogenizing influence of mainstream pop music at the time.
The album features the collaborative efforts of M. Brave and J. N. Bessonart, who approached the project as an ethnographic labor of love. Their design and production choices were centered on sonic transparency, aiming to strip away studio artifice to highlight the raw, communal nature of the performances. While it remained a niche release primarily distributed within the Basque Country, it was received warmly by local folklorists and ethnomusicologists who valued the technical commitment to capturing authentic vocal intonations and regional dialects.
