Senegal, La Kora Vol.2

Released in 1975 by the French label Arion, Senegal: La Kora Vol. 2 captures the virtuosic mastery of Lamine Konté, a renowned Senegalese griot and kora player. This recording was part of Arion's broader initiative to document and preserve traditional music from various global cultures, providing an international platform for artists whose work was deeply rooted in the oral traditions of the Mandinka people. The kora, a 21-string harp-lute, serves as the central focus of the album, showcasing complex melodic improvisations and the rhythmic dexterity characteristic of the instrument's heritage.

The album reflects the era's growing Western interest in world music and folk traditions, aiming to present authentic, high-fidelity field recordings to a curious European audience. Konté's performance is widely regarded as a benchmark for contemporary kora interpretation during the 1970s, balancing strict adherence to traditional techniques with a clarity of sound that allowed the nuances of the strings to resonate. While not designed as a commercial pop record, the release successfully introduced the meditative and technical depth of Senegalese string music to a wider pedagogical and ethnomusicological audience.
