Where it came from
Released in 1973 under the Epic label, this single is a localized pressing of the track 'If You Want Me to Stay' from the influential album Fresh. During this period, Sly & The Family Stone were moving away from the exuberant optimism of their earlier work toward a moodier, funk-driven aesthetic, a transition heavily influenced by the bassist Larry Graham's departure and Sly Stone's own increasing personal struggles.
The Spanish-titled 'Si Quieres Que Me Quede' represents the global reach of the band's catalog during the early 1970s, as record labels utilized local market translations to increase radio play in non-English speaking territories. The minimalist, bass-heavy production captures the tight, disciplined musicianship that defined the group's mature phase, standing as one of the most recognizable examples of the funk sound that would eventually pave the way for P-Funk and modern R&B.
