Sinfonie Nr. 1 D-dur D82 / Sinfonie Nr. 2 B-dur D125

This 1987 ETERNA release captures the Staatskapelle Berlin performing the first two symphonies of Franz Schubert under the baton of Otmar Suitner. ETERNA, the state-owned record label of the German Democratic Republic, was highly regarded for its high-fidelity recordings of the central European canon, frequently utilizing the acoustic excellence of East Berlin's Christuskirche for their sessions.

Otmar Suitner, an Austrian conductor who served as the Staatskapelle Berlin's general music director for decades, was noted for his balanced, clarity-driven interpretations of the classical repertoire. By the late 1980s, the Staatskapelle had developed a distinct, warm, and transparent orchestral sound that critics often praised for its fidelity to traditional Austro-German playing styles, making this recording a refined example of the label's commitment to preserving Schubert's early symphonic work.
