Provenance

Where it came from

Released by the East German state-owned label ETERNA in 1976, this recording highlights a selection of Ludwig van Beethoven's lesser-known variation sets, including his folk song arrangements and theme-based miniatures. The production was part of an effort by the German Democratic Republic to maintain a robust catalog of classical works, utilizing prominent performers from the Dresden Staatskapelle and other state-affiliated musical institutions to ensure high-fidelity documentation of the European canon.

The performance features pianist Eva Ander alongside flutist Johannes Walter and harpist Jutta Zoff, reflecting the collaborative approach of Eastern Bloc chamber ensembles during the mid-1970s. These performances were intended to bring academic rigor to Beethoven's pedagogical and experimental works, presenting the variations as both technical exercises and elegant pieces of salon music, characterized by the precise, clear production aesthetic that defined ETERNA’s classical engineering during this period.
