Provenance

Where it came from

This album documents the musical legacy of Dirkie Smit, a prominent figure in the South African boereorkes tradition. Released in 1988 on the Music For Pleasure label, the record commemorates his victory in the 1982 TV Boereorkes Competition, a broadcast platform that played a significant role in popularizing traditional Afrikaans dance music during the era.

The recording serves as a cultural artifact of the boereorkes style, which typically features a lively blend of accordion, concertina, guitar, and bass. As part of the Music For Pleasure budget series, the release aimed to make Smit’s competition-winning arrangements accessible to a wide audience of ballroom and folk music enthusiasts throughout South Africa.
