Sonata No. 11 In A Major, K.331 - Sonata No. 15 In C Major, K.545 / Sonata No. 5 In G Major, K. 283 - Rondo In A Minor, K.511

Released in 1955 by Vox Productions, this recording features the Brazilian pianist Guiomar Novaes performing a selection of Mozart’s piano sonatas and rondo. The album emerged during a period when the Vox label was actively building its reputation by documenting the repertoire of esteemed yet under-recorded classical musicians, often favoring a direct, unadorned capture of the performance over the heavy studio polish favored by major labels of the era.

The design of this release reflects the minimalist aesthetic of mid-century classical record jackets, which focused primarily on the prestige of the performer and the integrity of the works. Novaes, celebrated for her poetic touch and rhythmic vitality, was renowned for her Mozart interpretations, which critics often noted for their effortless grace and clarity. Her approach was deeply grounded in the Romantic tradition, prioritizing lyrical expression and structural balance, a stylistic choice that resonated well with listeners seeking an alternative to the increasingly rigid academic performances of the 1950s.
