Sonatas & Variations For Violin & Piano: Complete In Two Volumes, Vol. II

Released in 1963 as part of the Vox Box series, this recording captured the collaboration between Hungarian violinist György Pauk and pianist Peter Frankl. The Vox label, renowned for its ambitious and budget-conscious classical music series, sought to provide listeners with comprehensive sets of major composers' works. By packaging Mozart’s sonatas and variations as a complete collection across multiple volumes, the label aimed to make rigorous, scholarly performances accessible to the broader post-war record-buying public.

The recording is noted for the distinct musical partnership between Pauk and Frankl, who frequently performed together throughout their careers. Their interpretation favored a balanced, Classical-era clarity, avoiding the heavy romanticized readings common in earlier decades. Critics of the era generally praised the set for its academic precision and the seamless interplay between the two soloists, cementing the Vox Box reputation for reliable, high-quality documentation of the standard chamber repertoire.
