Where it came from
This recording was released by BASF, a label that briefly expanded into classical music production during the 1970s. The record features the renowned Austrian pianist Jörg Demus alongside Norman Shetler, performing a selection of Mozart’s works for piano duo and solo keyboard. By this stage in his career, Demus was internationally recognized for his deep scholarship and sensitive, historically informed approach to the Viennese classical repertoire.
The album includes the Sonata in D major, K. 448, one of Mozart's most celebrated works for two pianos, contrasted with the lightness of the 'Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman' variations and the introspective nature of the Fantasia in D minor. The recording reflects the aesthetic priorities of the era, which favored clarity of articulation and a balanced, nuanced tone. Upon its release, it served as part of a series intended to showcase both the virtuosity of the performers and the high-fidelity sound quality BASF aimed to establish in the classical market.
