Sonate D-dur Für Zwei Klaviere KV 448 / Variationen »Ah, Vous Dirai-Je Maman« / Fantasie d-moll KV 397 / Andante Con Variazioni G-dur KV 501

This Harmonia Mundi release, catalog number HMS 30 829, features a selection of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s piano works performed by the celebrated Austrian pianist Jörg Demus and his frequent collaborator Norman Shetler. The recordings were produced during the mid-20th century, a period when the Harmonia Mundi label was actively expanding its catalog of high-fidelity classical interpretations, focusing on historically informed sensibilities and technical precision. The pairing of Demus and Shetler on this record highlights the duo’s long-standing partnership, which was highly regarded for its structural clarity and refined phrasing in the interpretation of Classical era repertoire.

The selection includes the Sonata for Two Pianos in D major, KV 448, one of Mozart’s most technically demanding and structurally symmetrical works, alongside the charming 'Ah, vous dirai-je, maman' variations and the introspective Fantasie in D minor. The design and liner notes of this pressing reflect the scholarly yet accessible approach typical of Harmonia Mundi’s European releases during this era. Critics and listeners of the time often praised Demus for his authoritative command of the Viennese keyboard tradition, noting his ability to balance technical virtuosity with the emotional depth required for Mozart’s varied compositions.
