Where it came from
This recording was produced by Harmonia Mundi in 1966 to commemorate the reopening of the Collection of Ancient Musical Instruments at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The release served as a bridge between the historical instruments housed in the collection and the performance of Romantic and Classical repertoire, featuring pianists Jörg Demus and Norman Shetler, who were prominent figures in the mid-century revival of period-informed performance.
The album features Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D major and Schumann's Kinderszenen. Demus and Shetler were noted for their scholarly approach to interpretation, often opting for subtle, nuanced phrasing that favored clarity over the heavier, more percussive styles that dominated the post-war era. The record was received as a respectful contribution to the museum's cultural mission, highlighting the intersection of archival preservation and living musical practice.
