Lore

Why it matters

Schubert's D.810, composed in the shadow of his own failing health, remains one of the most profound expressions of existential struggle in the string quartet repertoire. This 1990 EMI recording by the Cherubini-Quartett is valued by collectors for its precise, disciplined interpretation of the quartet’s intense emotional shifts, pairing the somber "Death and the Maiden" with the restless energy of the "Quartettsatz."

Provenance

Where it came from

Released by EMI in 1990, this recording features the Cherubini-Quartett performing Franz Schubert's iconic String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, known as 'Death and the Maiden,' alongside the Quartettsatz in C minor. The album captures the quartet during a period when they were highly regarded for their rigorous, analytical approach to the classical and romantic canon. The selection of these works highlights Schubert's dramatic shift toward intense, symphonic textures within the intimate chamber music medium, reflecting the composer's preoccupation with mortality and existential tension.

The Cherubini-Quartett's interpretation is noted for its structural clarity and technical precision, traits that were central to the ensemble's identity during their active years. By pairing the late masterpiece D.810 with the unfinished D.703, the release provides a cohesive portrait of Schubert’s evolution as a quartet composer. Upon its release, the recording was recognized for its adherence to German performance traditions, offering a stark and emotionally disciplined take on pieces that often invite more overtly sentimental interpretations.
