Streichquartette = String Quartets = Quatuors A Cordes Nr. 13 A-Moll • Nr. 9 G-Moll

Released in 1976 on the Telefunken label, this recording features the Alban Berg Quartett performing Franz Schubert’s String Quartets No. 13 in A minor and No. 9 in G minor. The Alban Berg Quartett, founded in Vienna in 1970, quickly established itself as a premier ensemble of its generation, bringing a uniquely rigorous and polished approach to the classical repertoire. This specific release sits within Telefunken’s mid-seventies push to capture the ensemble's early technical precision and interpretive depth.

The recording serves as a foundational example of the quartet's dedication to the Second Viennese School’s heritage, while simultaneously showcasing their interpretation of the Romantic tradition through Schubert. The cover design adheres to the minimalist, information-heavy aesthetic favored by European labels of the era, prioritizing clarity and scholarly presentation for a sophisticated classical audience. Critics of the time praised the record for the group's lean, disciplined phrasing and the high-fidelity engineering that defined the Telefunken 'Das Alte Werk' and chamber music series.
