Where it came from
These early string quartets, penned by Mozart during his youth in the 1770s, reflect the influence of the Italian style and the evolving classical form he encountered during his travels. This particular release by the Dimov Bulgarian State Quartet was part of a broader archival project by United Artists Records in the late 1970s to bring high-quality European chamber performances to a wider international audience, often packaged with clean, minimalist aesthetics characteristic of the era's classical record design.
The Dimov Quartet, led by violinist Dimov, was highly regarded for their technical precision and their dedication to the rigor of the Bulgarian school of string playing. Their approach to these early Mozart compositions was noted for its clarity and disciplined phrasing, aimed at emphasizing the structural maturity present in Mozart's nascent mastery of the quartet form. The recordings were received as a reliable, academic contribution to the Mozart discography of the time, appreciated by enthusiasts for their balance of warmth and formal accuracy.
