Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1971 on the Supraphon label, this compilation record captures a curated selection of romantic and ceremonial classical pieces, common in the mid-century Eastern Bloc tradition of 'marriage records.' It reflects a broader cultural practice in Czechoslovakia where state-owned labels produced standardized music collections intended for use during wedding ceremonies and anniversary celebrations, serving as a functional soundtrack for domestic milestones.

The album features various performers interpreting repertoire that spans from Wagner and Mendelssohn to regional romantic compositions. The design aesthetic is characteristic of Supraphon’s production during the early 1970s, which favored functional, dignified cover art that signaled the solemnity of the occasion. It was received primarily as a utilitarian household item, valued more for its ceremonial utility within the home than for individual artistic innovation.
