Swan Lake - Sleeping Beauty / Schwanensee - Dornroschen

Released in 1985 by His Master's Voice, this recording captures the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Italian conductor Riccardo Muti. The album serves as a definitive orchestral suite selection from Tchaikovsky’s two most iconic ballet scores, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty. At this time, Muti was deepening his tenure as the orchestra's music director, a period characterized by a pursuit of refined, high-fidelity sound that emphasized the lush, romantic textures inherent in Tchaikovsky's orchestration.

The recording process reflected the label's commitment to capturing the signature 'Philadelphia Sound,' which was historically noted for its rich string sections and disciplined brass. While these excerpts are staple repertoire, Muti’s approach was noted by critics for its dramatic pacing and technical precision. The design of the sleeve adheres to the standard classical presentation of the era, focusing on clear cataloging and archival aesthetics to appeal to serious collectors of the HMV and EMI classical catalogs.
