Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1986 by Varèse Sarabande, this recording is part of the label's long-standing effort to preserve and revitalize classic film scores. The album features the Queensland Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Richard Mills, focusing on the prolific work of composer Franz Waxman. This compilation brings together suites and excerpts from iconic films including The Bride of Frankenstein and The Paradine Case, representing a pivotal era of Golden Age Hollywood scoring where symphonic complexity was used to heighten gothic horror and high-stakes drama.

The selection highlights Waxman's distinct compositional style, characterized by his ability to bridge European romanticism with American cinematic sensibilities. Richard Mills directed the orchestra to emphasize the technical precision and atmospheric intensity inherent in Waxman’s original arrangements. Within the collecting community, this specific release is appreciated for its contribution to the scholarly appreciation of film music, offering a cleaner, more modern orchestral interpretation of scores that were previously available only in aging mono soundtrack masters.
