Where it came from
Released in 1976 on the Oshisayo label, this record represents a distinct period in South African mbaqanga and traditional-influenced music. The collaboration between Sthombe Mdleko, Amavelhbahleke, and the Abafana Benala Girls captures the rich, rhythmic textures and vocal harmonies that defined the domestic recording industry of the era, operating within the specific cultural and social frameworks of the mid-1970s.
The production style of the Oshisayo catalog was characterized by its accessibility and its focus on local regional sounds, designed to appeal to both urban and rural audiences. While the specific aesthetic choices regarding the artwork or the precise recording sessions for this release remain part of the broader legacy of township music, the record stands as an example of the collaborative spirit often found in the South African recording studio environment during this time.
