Hamba Juba Lami / Adlulile Amavulandela

Released in 1976 on the Oshisayo label, this 45-rpm single serves as a vibrant example of the mbaqanga and traditional Zulu vocal music scene that thrived in South Africa during the mid-1970s. The record features the collaborative efforts of Sthombe Mdleko, Amavelhbahleke, and the Abafana Benala Girls, reflecting the communal and high-energy studio practices common to the South African independent labels of the era, which often paired established vocal troupes with talented session musicians to capture the popular urban sound of the townships.

The production aesthetic of the Oshisayo label, cataloged here as OSB 6, focused on raw, rhythmic accessibility designed for the thriving dance halls and domestic radio markets of the time. While the specific design history of this sleeve is indicative of the functional, minimal art direction favored by independent African labels to keep costs low and production volume high, the music itself remains a significant archival piece of the era's cultural output, documenting the blend of traditional choral harmonies and the driving, electric beat that defined the mbaqanga genre.
