Unpretty (UK Garage Mixes)

The Unpretty (UK Garage Mixes) 12-inch, released under the catalog number SS 004 in 2000, is a quintessential artifact of the UK garage bootleg scene at the turn of the millennium. During this era, anonymous producers frequently created unofficial remixes of popular R&B and pop tracks, pressing them onto white label vinyl to be played in underground clubs and pirate radio stations. This particular release reworks TLC's 1999 hit single, speeding up the tempo and layering it over the syncopated percussion and heavy sub-bass lines characteristic of the 2-step garage sound.

As an uncredited production, the design of this release reflects the utilitarian aesthetic of the time, typically housed in a plain white or generic die-cut sleeve with minimal information stamped or handwritten on the center label. The record was produced for the dancefloor, prioritizing the rhythmic utility of the remix over formal branding or marketing. Its reception was localized to the vibrant UK underground circuit, where such bootlegs were valued for their ability to bring recognizable vocal hooks into a contemporary club context, remaining a sought-after rarity for collectors of early 2000s electronic music.
