Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1977 on the Polydor label, this compilation record captures the vibrant essence of traditional Gujarati folk music during a period when regional music was gaining significant traction in the Indian recording industry. Produced to coincide with the festivities of Navratri, the album serves as a curated collection of Garba and Raas tracks designed specifically to facilitate community dancing and large-scale public celebrations.

The aesthetic and musical direction of the project reflects Polydor's efforts to standardize high-quality audio documentation for traditional folk forms. By gathering various artists under the banner of a professional studio production, the label aimed to provide a consistent rhythmic experience suitable for the complex, cyclical steps of the Garba dance. The album remains a notable artifact of late 1970s South Asian cultural programming, valued by collectors for its role in preserving the communal soundscapes of the era.
