Verbotene Liebe

Verbotene Liebe, released in 1990 by Holger Stern on the HSR label, represents a distinct artifact from the European synth-pop and schlager-adjacent independent scene of the early nineties. During this period, small-scale production houses like Happy Sound Records often served as outlets for independent artists to experiment with electronic instrumentation and melodramatic songwriting, which were then gaining renewed popularity in regional German markets.

The record reflects the aesthetic trends of its time, utilizing the crisp, digital-leaning production typical of low-budget nineties synth compositions. Designed for niche distribution, the release aimed to capture the sentimental tone common in radio-friendly ballads of the era. While it remained a relatively obscure entry in the broader landscape of independent German music, it functions as a snapshot of the amateur and semi-professional studio culture that flourished shortly after the reunification of Germany.
