Provenance

Where it came from

Released under the Telefunken label during the mid-20th century, Wine, Waltzes And Zither Romance—originally titled Die Zither, Der Walzer Und Der Wein—captures the quintessential alpine ambiance of post-war Austrian and Bavarian popular music. The album features the virtuoso zither performances of Alfons Bauer, a musician who played a pivotal role in popularizing the folk instrument internationally during the era of the 'zither craze' that followed the success of the film The Third Man.

Bauer’s arrangements were designed to evoke the cozy, nostalgic atmosphere of Viennese coffee houses and alpine taverns, blending traditional waltz rhythms with the characteristic bright, metallic timbre of the zither. The production focuses on instrumental accessibility, aiming to provide a soothing, romantic listening experience that appealed to audiences seeking a refined connection to Central European cultural traditions. It remains a representative example of Telefunken’s extensive catalog of regional folk and light classical recordings from this period.
