Where it came from
Released in 2018 on the acclaimed Ghostly International label, X-Altera is the self-titled project of Tadd Mullinix, a producer known for his genre-fluid approach to electronic music. This record represents a specific return to the rhythmic complexities and aesthetic sensibilities of 1990s jungle and drum and bass, distilled through Mullinix's own experimental production lens. It emerged as a deliberate effort to evoke the sonic atmosphere of classic rave culture while maintaining a modern, high-fidelity soundscape.
The design of the record reflects the minimalist yet evocative visual identity often associated with the Ghostly International catalog. By centering the work on a synthesis of breakbeat, techno, and atmospheric sound design, Mullinix intended to honor the lineage of UK dance music that influenced his formative years. Upon release, the project was well-received by critics and electronic music enthusiasts for its technical precision and its successful marriage of nostalgic textures with contemporary digital production techniques.
