Where it came from
The X-Ray Fiends eponymous debut, released in 2013 on the Sound Recordings label under catalog number SR-LP02, emerged from a localized underground scene defined by a revivalist approach to garage rock and lo-fi aesthetics. The album was produced as a direct response to the polished, digital-first production trends dominant in the early 2010s, aiming instead to capture the raw, unrefined energy of rehearsal-space recordings and analog tape saturation.
The design of the release reflects a deliberate choice to prioritize utilitarian, minimal aesthetics over elaborate promotional art, a common hallmark of the Sound Recordings catalog. This visual minimalism was intended to focus the listener entirely on the frantic, guitar-driven soundscapes of the band. Upon its release, the record was noted by independent music critics for its uncompromising grit and its adherence to traditional DIY distribution methods, cementing its status as a sought-after entry for enthusiasts of contemporary garage rock.
