Where it came from
Xau Xau De Xangai was released in 1983 by the Brazilian group Da Vinci (3) under the Polydor label. Emerging from the vibrant and diverse Brazilian pop scene of the early 1980s, the single reflects the era's experimentation with synth-pop and dance-oriented sounds that were gaining popularity in domestic markets at the time. The record stands as a representative piece of the group's work during their tenure with a major label, capturing a period when local artists were increasingly blending international production styles with regional lyrical sensibilities.
The composition and aesthetic direction of this release were representative of Polydor's approach to the Brazilian market in the early 80s, focusing on radio-friendly arrangements and polished studio production. As part of a catalog number series (815 860-7) aimed at listeners of contemporary pop and dance music, the track was intended to bridge the gap between traditional MPB roots and the modern soundscapes dominating the airwaves. While not as widely cited in retrospective music journalism as larger acts of the period, it remains a recognized artifact of the 1983 Brazilian record industry.
