Provenance

Where it came from

Released by the state-owned Soviet label Melodiya in 1980, this recording features the prominent Soviet organist Harry Grodberg performing a selection of compositions from the 13th to the 18th centuries. The album serves as a representative artifact of the mid-20th-century Soviet classical music movement, during which Grodberg was instrumental in popularizing organ repertoire through extensive touring and recording projects, often performed on instruments located in historic concert halls and cathedrals across the USSR.

The album's design and curation reflect the standardized aesthetic of Melodiya's classical series, which focused on archiving significant performances for the domestic market. Grodberg, a student of the legendary Isaak Braudo, was widely respected for his technical precision and his commitment to bringing Western European Baroque and pre-Baroque organ traditions to an audience whose access to such music was often mediated by state institutions. The selection highlights the breadth of his repertoire, from early liturgical works to the intricate fugues of the high Baroque period.
