Carmen-Suite = Кармен-Сюита

The Carmen Suite was composed by Rodion Shchedrin in 1967 as a transcription for strings and percussion based on themes from Georges Bizet’s 1875 opera, Carmen. Commissioned for his wife, the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, the work was designed to reimagine the familiar melodies with a modern, percussive edge, stripping away the traditional wind and brass sections in favor of a robust percussion battery. It emerged during a period of creative experimentation in Soviet music, blending classical rigor with a theatrical, contemporary sensibility.

This specific recording featuring the Moscow Virtuosi under the direction of Vladimir Spivakov was released on the Melodiya label, the state-owned record company of the Soviet Union. As a leading violinist and conductor, Spivakov’s interpretation emphasized the sharp, rhythmic interplay between the strings and the percussionists. Upon its release, the recording was praised for its technical precision and the ensemble's ability to maintain the intense, rhythmic drive required by Shchedrin’s arrangement, further cementing the suite as a staple of both the concert hall and the Soviet recording catalog.
