Released by the Melodiya label in 1978, this recording of 'Lute Music of the 16th-17th Centuries' was credited to Vladimir Vavilov, a Russian guitarist and lutenist. While presented as a collection of works by Renaissance and Baroque composers such as John Dowland and Francesco da Milano, the compositions were in fact written by Vavilov himself, most notably the famous 'Ave Maria' which he attributed to Giulio Caccini.

The album reflects the mid-20th-century Soviet fascination with early Western music, a field that was often approached with a degree of artistic liberty behind the Iron Curtain. Vavilov’s stylistic mimicry was so convincing that it deceived scholars and critics for years, leaving a legacy defined more by the elaborate musical hoax than by the authenticity of its tracklist. Since the eventual discovery of the true authorship, the record has become a prized curiosity for collectors of classical misattribution.
