While presented as a collection of works by various Renaissance and Baroque composers, it was later revealed that the primary composer and performer was the Soviet musician Vladimir Vavilov. Operating within the cultural environment of the Soviet Union, Vavilov utilized pseudonyms to bypass the perceived limitations of the state-run music distribution system.

The album is most famous for featuring the 'Ave Maria', which Vavilov attributed to the 16th-century composer Giulio Caccini. The piece became an international sensation, celebrated for its evocative and melancholic melody. Despite the attribution being a creative fiction on the part of Vavilov, the composition has endured as a significant piece of modern classical repertoire, demonstrating how the work’s emotional resonance eventually superseded its origins as a well-intentioned musical hoax.
