Where it came from
Released by the Melodiya label in 1984, this recording of lute music from the 16th and 17th centuries features works attributed to historical figures such as John Dowland and Francesco da Milano. In reality, the collection is a masterful collection of musical hoaxes composed by the Soviet guitarist and lutenist Vladimir Vavilov. Vavilov, who died in 1973, spent years attributing his own compositions to Renaissance masters, believing that his work would be dismissed by Soviet censors if it were presented under his own name.
The album is perhaps best known for containing the piece widely known as 'Ave Maria,' which Vavilov famously attributed to Giulio Caccini. The design and presentation of the record aimed to evoke an atmosphere of authentic early music scholarship, a ruse that succeeded for decades. It was only after Vavilov's passing that the true authorship of these pieces was uncovered, leading to the record's re-evaluation as a curious artifact of musical deception rather than a collection of genuine baroque repertoire.
