Where it came from
Released under the Melodiya label during the mid-20th century, this recording captures the State Republican Academic Russian Choral Chapel under the direction of Alexander Yurlov. The album serves as a scholarly preservation of liturgical and secular Russian choral compositions spanning the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, a period marked by the development of the znamenny chant and the transition toward the polyphonic 'partesny' style that defined the Muscovite and Imperial eras.
The recording is part of Melodiya’s effort to document the cultural heritage of the Soviet Union through high-fidelity classical releases. Alexander Yurlov, a central figure in Soviet choral music, was renowned for his meticulous revival of early Russian works, emphasizing clarity, structural integrity, and deep historical reverence. The production was intended to showcase the technical precision of the Chapel, receiving acclaim among musicologists for its contribution to the scholarly understanding of Russian sacred music history.
