Violin Works Of Giovanni Battista Viotti, Alexander Glazunov,Reinhold Glière, Benjamin Godard

This recording was released by the Soviet state-owned record label Melodiya, which served as the sole distributor of recorded music in the USSR during the mid-twentieth century. The disc highlights the virtuosic capabilities of Soviet violinist David Oistrakh, who was a central figure in the state's cultural diplomacy efforts. By pairing the works of Italian virtuoso Giovanni Battista Viotti with Romantic-era composers like Glazunov, Glière, and Godard, the collection was intended to showcase Oistrakh's mastery of both classical rigor and emotive lyricism.

The technical design of this pressing follows the standard aesthetic of Melodiya releases from the 1960s, featuring minimal, utilitarian cover art that prioritized the inclusion of the official state catalog information. Oistrakh’s interpretations were highly regarded both domestically and internationally, as he was one of the few Soviet artists permitted to tour widely during the Cold War. These recordings were essential components of the label's mission to archive the prominent Soviet performance tradition for both scholarly study and public appreciation.
