Why it matters

This recording of Afanasy Fet’s verse is part of Melodiya’s significant series dedicated to documenting the breadth of Russian poetry across three centuries. As a foundational figure in 19th-century lyrical poetry, Fet’s work is prized for its focus on fleeting impressions and the musicality of language, making this spoken-word collection a vital archival piece for those interested in the Russian literary tradition.

Provenance

Where it came from

Released by the state-run Melodiya label in 1982, this recording is part of the extensive 'Pages of Russian Poetry' series, which sought to preserve and propagate the canonical literary heritage of Russia through the medium of spoken-word audio. By the early 1980s, these LPs were instrumental in bringing the works of 18th to 20th-century masters into the homes of Soviet citizens, serving both an educational function and a role in cultural preservation during the late Soviet era.

This specific volume features the lyrical works of Afanasy Fet, one of the most prominent Russian poets of the mid-19th century known for his focus on pure art and impressionistic descriptions of nature. The recording utilizes professional voice actors, a hallmark of the Melodiya label, to highlight the musicality and emotional depth of Fet's verse. The sleeve design adheres to the minimalist, archival aesthetic typical of Melodiya's literary series, intended to present the material as a serious, classic contribution to the national archive.
