Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yester-Day / I Wanna Make Her Love Me

Released in 1969 on the Tamla Motown label, Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yester-Day was a pivotal international hit for Stevie Wonder during a period of transition in his career. The track, written by Ron Miller and Bryan Wells, leaned into a polished, melodic sound that bridged the gap between his earlier youthful hits and the more experimental, socially conscious soul he would pioneer in the 1970s. It achieved significant success in Europe, becoming one of his signature songs on the continent during the late sixties.

The single reflects the high production standards of the Motown hit-making machine under the direction of legendary figures like Henry Cosby. The song’s arrangement focuses on nostalgic longing and orchestral pop sensibilities, marking a departure from the uptempo R&B style that characterized his earlier years. It remains a hallmark of the era, showcasing Wonder's evolving vocal maturity and his ability to resonate with global audiences through emotionally accessible balladry.
