Where it came from
Released in 1969 on the Tamla Motown label, Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday was written by Ron Miller and Bryan Wells. It served as a pivotal track for Stevie Wonder during a transitional period in his career, bridging his earlier work as a child prodigy with the more sophisticated, socially conscious sound he would develop in the 1970s. The song reflects the sentimental, narrative-driven songwriting style that was a hallmark of Motown’s legendary production house at the time.
The track was composed to highlight Wonder's evolving vocal range and emotive delivery, leaning into the melancholic nostalgia that proved highly popular with global audiences. Upon its release, it became a significant international success, reaching the top ten in several countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States. Its enduring legacy is grounded in its polished production and the clear, earnest tone that defined the late sixties Motown aesthetic.
