Provenance

Where it came from

Zig-Zag was released in 1972 on the Barclay label, serving as a pivotal entry in Eddy Mitchell’s discography during a transitional period of his career. By this time, Mitchell had moved away from the rock and roll revivalism of his early Les Chaussettes Noires years to embrace a more nuanced, rhythm and blues-inflected sound that leaned into American soul and country-rock influences.

The album reflects a production style rooted in the recording sessions of the era, characterized by a sophisticated, professional sheen typical of Barclay’s prestige releases. It was received as a strong showcase of Mitchell’s evolving maturity as a vocalist and songwriter, cementing his reputation as a versatile fixture of the French popular music scene, capable of bridging the gap between nostalgic roots music and contemporary pop sensibilities.
