Zig-zag, Zig-zag / En El Jardin

Released in 1971 on the Expanse label, Zig-zag / En El Jardin represents the experimental landscape of South American pop music during the early seventies. Produced by Famas Unidas, the single emerged during a period of transition for regional labels attempting to reconcile traditional local sounds with the rising influence of international psychedelic and garage rock aesthetics. The recording serves as a historical marker for independent production houses of the era, which often operated with limited distribution networks but fostered significant creative freedom.

The design and composition of the record focus on a minimalist approach to the sleeve art, which was intended to mirror the repetitive, hypnotic nature of the music itself. While documentation on the specific graphic designer is scarce, the visual style follows the mid-century trend of bold, abstract patterns that defined the Expanse label’s catalog. At the time of its release, the record received a modest reception primarily within niche musical circles, later gaining a reputation among enthusiasts of rare Latin psych and beat records for its distinct sonic textures.
