Where it came from
Released in 1996 on Five Star Recordings, Zig Zag Zen represents a distinct entry in the mid-nineties electronic and trip-hop landscape. The record, cataloged as UR 28DLP, emerged during a period of experimentation for the label, which sought to bridge the gap between burgeoning underground dance floor sounds and the more downtempo, atmospheric textures gaining traction in European club culture at the time.
The visual identity and production of the record were helmed by Le Gooster, an artist associated with the label's aesthetic shift during the mid-nineties. The design intent focused on creating an immersive sonic environment that matched the album's title, favoring layered, hypnotic rhythms. While the project remains a deep cut for general audiences, it is recognized by collectors of the era for its consistent production quality and its reflection of the label's efforts to cultivate a specific, mood-oriented soundscape.
