Where it came from
Released in 1988 under Herman van Veen’s own label, Harlekijn, this record reflects the artist's long-standing fascination with the figure of the clown as a metaphor for the human condition. Van Veen, a prominent Dutch multi-hyphenate artist, utilized his theater and music productions to explore themes of melancholy, playfulness, and societal critique. This specific release functions as both a musical recording and a narrative piece, drawing from his cabaret work which often blurred the lines between storytelling and song.
The design of the album aligns with the minimalist, sophisticated aesthetic typical of Harlekijn releases during the late 1980s. Van Veen’s work from this period was generally well-received by his dedicated European audience, who valued his poetic, introspective approach to songwriting. The production emphasizes a theatrical intimacy, aiming to replicate the atmosphere of a live performance and reinforcing the artist's persona as a modern-day troubadour and storyteller.
