Zingt Abi Men Zet Zich! - Het Jiddische Lied

Released in 1986 on the Syncoop label, Zingt Abi Men Zet Zich! represents a deliberate effort to preserve the rich, melancholic, and joyful heritage of Yiddish folk music. The album features Lex Goudsmit, a Dutch actor and singer whose career spanned stage and screen, applying his signature warmth and lived-in vocal style to these traditional songs. It was recorded during a period of renewed academic and cultural interest in European Jewish musical history, serving as a medium for Goudsmit to share the linguistic and melodic legacy of his own background.

The album's design and arrangement reflect a commitment to authenticity over commercial polish, focusing on Goudsmit's storytelling ability. Syncoop Records was known for documenting folk and ethnic music, and they utilized this production to provide a stable, minimalist foundation that allowed the nuances of Goudsmit’s Yiddish phrasing to remain the central focus. While it was never intended for mainstream chart success, the record was well-received within circles interested in world music and cultural preservation for its sincere, unpretentious interpretation of classic Yiddish repertoire.
