Where it came from
Ascending Soul was released in 2015 as part of the booster set The Secret Forces, a release primarily focused on supporting specific archetypes like Yosenju, Nekroz, and Ritual Beasts. This spell card reflects the mechanical focus of the set, which leaned heavily into ritual summoning strategies by providing resource recovery and graveyard manipulation to facilitate complex combo chains during high-level play.
The card’s design features the signature aesthetic of the Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game, utilizing fantasy-themed iconography that characterizes the spell and trap support cards from the ARC-V era. It was intended as a utility tool for ritual-based decks, and while it saw moderate use within its specific synergy groups, it remains a recognized example of the support-heavy card design philosophy prevalent during this period of the game's evolution.
