Provenance

Where it came from

Preparation of Rites was released in The Secret Forces, a special booster set introduced to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in early 2015. The set was specifically designed to provide strong support for three particular archetypes: Nekroz, Yosenju, and Ritual Beasts. As a ritual-themed spell card, it was crafted to act as a vital consistency tool, allowing players to search for level 7 or lower ritual monsters while also providing utility by retrieving ritual spells from the graveyard.

The card’s design aligns with the high-fantasy, intricately armored aesthetic that defined the Nekroz archetype, which heavily utilized previously established monster designs from the game's history. Mechanically, the card was widely received by competitive players as a quintessential engine piece. Its ability to generate card advantage and facilitate complex ritual summons made it a staple in competitive play throughout the era of the Nekroz dominance.
