Backup Soldier

Backup Soldier was introduced in the Pharaoh's Servant expansion, released in North America in 2002. As a Normal Trap card, it was designed to provide players with a specific tactical advantage, allowing the recovery of up to five Normal Monsters from the Graveyard to the hand. This mechanic emerged during an era of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game where synergy between low-level monsters and resource management was a central focus of competitive deck building.

The card features artwork consistent with the aesthetic of the early Konami releases, characterized by industrial and militaristic themes. Like many cards from the Pharaoh's Servant set, it was illustrated to fit the game's evolving meta-game, aimed at supporting decks that relied on the graveyard as a secondary resource pool. It gained moderate recognition among players for its utility in specific strategies, though its viability fluctuated as the game's speed increased over the following decades.
