Backup Soldier

Backup Soldier was introduced in the 2004 Starter Deck: Yugi Evolution, a product designed to update the foundational trading card game experience for newer players while celebrating the legacy of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series. The card serves as a specialized trap card allowing players to retrieve up to five Normal Monsters from their graveyard to their hand, reflecting the game's early emphasis on maintaining board presence and resource management through low-level monster utility.

The card's design features artwork consistent with the aesthetic of the early Konami TCG era, emphasizing a functional, utilitarian visual style typical of the common-rarity trap cards in the Yugi-themed starter decks. As a staple utility card during its release window, it was intended to provide a recovery mechanic for decks built around non-effect monsters, helping bridge the gap between simple aggressive play and more nuanced tactical deck building that defined the mid-2000s meta.
