Provenance

Where it came from

Backup Squad was originally released in the 2004 Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG expansion Soul of the Duelist. As a Continuous Spell card, it was designed to provide a resource-recovery mechanism, rewarding players for absorbing damage by allowing them to draw cards when their Life Points were lower than their opponent's. The card's artwork features a group of minor characters, reflecting the theme of underdog support often found in early-era trap and spell card design.

The inclusion of this card in the 2023 Speed Duel GX: Duelists of Shadows box set brought the legacy mechanic into the streamlined Speed Duel format. The design intent for this iteration was to offer players a defensive utility option that fits within the tighter constraints of the Speed Duel ruleset. While common in rarity, it serves as a functional tactical tool for players utilizing comeback-oriented strategies.
